Batteries that may contain harmful substances are labelled with the crossed-out dustbin symbol. The chemical name of the harmful substance is usually found under this symbol. For example:
- Cd- for cadmium, contains more than 0.002 per cent cadmium.
- Pb- for lead, contains more than 0.004 per cent lead
- Hg- for mercury, contains more than 0.0005 per cent mercury
- Li- for Lithium.
